By default the topography calculation includes all the points of your route. But in case of many altitude variations or long distance, the result can be higher than in fact.
The "smoothing" allows you to choose to ignore the points which altitude difference is less than the chosen value (prevents small climbs and descents to be accumulated).
For short route the best value is 2m but for long route or route with hight elevation change, 10m is better.

Detailed problem description:
When deleting parts of the route with the "Delete the last point" option, the map go to the coordinates before the last point, like if the last point was deleted, but the route's red line is not deleted. The distance information on the map last point is updated, but the previous one is not deleted, so the information is "doubled". Numbers are displayed over the previous numbers.
The other error is that when I click on any place on the map with the left mouse button, nothing happens. I use this option to make routes on the orange marked roads, as with the right button the decision is not to take those roads.
I thought that this could be an error on my notebook, but I have tried the same procedures on my daughter's desktop, and the behavior was the same. The configuration of the computer is near the same, except that she is using Explorer 7.
I hope I've described better the problem now. If this is not clear, please, let me know and I can send you an e-mail (provide me your e-mail address) with some screen shots to try to show in more detail the problem.
It is important to notice that these procedures used to work fine, at least until my last saved route that passed on an orange road(ID 732).
